| Holes
are an integral part of our designs. While they are required for
functional design, they introduce areas of stress concentrations,
sometimes leading to crack initiation and failure. When we consider a
plate with a small hole in it, the theoretical stress concentration
factor is limited to 3, while we have observed that when we perform FEA
the value exceeds 3. Which is wrong? Theory or Finite Elements? Neither
!! How can Theory and Finite Elements produce different results and yet
both be correct? How can you overcome this hole stress concentration
problem? Put another hole !! A possible solution right? Think about it.Need

What's New in SolidWorks 2008
With more than 250 User-requested enhancements,
SolidWorks 2008 has set a new Paradigm in Design Solution.
SWIFT
Instant3D to create and modify 3D model features by
manipulating drag handles directly on the model, eliminating the need
for a bunch of commands, dialog boxes, and data input.
SWIFT
DimXpert feature in SolidWorks 2008 automatically sets
geometric dimensions and tolerances on parts. It gives visual feedback
on whether the model has been properly described and is ready for
manufacturing, and it automatically creates views, dimensions, and
tolerances in 2D drawings for design documentation. DimXpert adheres to
the ASME Y14.41-2003 3D specification.
Design
Clipart capability in SolidWorks 2008 lets reuse of portions
of existing designs in your new work. With it, you can search your file
systems for sketches, tables, images, features, or views, inside
existing designs. Once you find what you're looking for, Design Clipart
dissects target files, including AutoCAD, which lets you drag the item
and incorporate it in your new design.
DWGnavigator
lets you perform DWG-specific searches, find references, view, and
package files for sharing. You can also save files in the format of any
version of AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.
DriveWorksXpress,
automatically creates custom parts, assemblies, and drawings based on
pre-defined design rules, enabling companies to quickly and
economically respond to the unique needs of every customer.
Design
Insight displays the portions of your MCAD models that carry
applied loads, letting you determine if you should add material for
strength or subtract it to avoid costly over-engineering.
DFMXpress
is a design for manufacturability capability intended to prevent
downstream design errors by automatically flagging elements that are
difficult, expensive, or impossible to machine.
TolAnalyst is
an automated tolerance stack-up tool. It helps identify the most
critical tolerances and lets users tighten or loosen any tolerance to
avoid functional problems or costly over-engineering. TolAnalyst
reduces the need for error-prone hand calculations. Interested

Premature Babies, in a hurry
to come into this World, need all the care to keep them alive and
kicking, till their vital organs are ready to take the challenges of a
new environment. It has always been a medical Challenge to
re-create the Mother's Womb in terms of Temperature, Air Quality, Noise
Levels and Ergonomics. 360 Grader Produktdesign AS of Oslo,
Norway has designed the Premacare Incubator that addresses these vital
needs, to keep the loved one away from life threatening
conditions, and provide the Mother's Touch. Thanks to SolidWorks
this design has been taken up for mass production by Delphi Medical
Systems, Michigan USA. This innovative design having a 360°
access and has been developed after conducting an extensive survey of
healthcare providers who raised concerns about traditional
incubators. We look forward to seeing millions of patients and
their families benefit from such a wonderful product designed in
SolidWorks. The device won the Grand Prize at the SolidWorks
Design Contest 2005. "SolidWorks
3D CAD software is an indispensable tool for us to develop complex
shapes that are ready for production," said designer Torgeir
Hamsund , co-founder and CEO of 360 Grader Produktdesign. "It's
thrilling when elegant design meets life-saving medicine, and the
result is a product with unusual beauty and value," said Rainer
Gawlick, SolidWorks Vice-President.

Boosting
Agricultural Productivity with SolidWorks
Imagine
the rice on plate having stones and non-grain items that make
you cringe with pain and anguish. Remember the old times when your
grandmother used to sit and separate food grains from these
infiltrants. Now it is a thing of past. Orange Sorting Machinery,
Coimbatore is developing next generation Grain Sorting machines with
special emphasis on quality, efficiency and improved productivity using
latest technologies in Mechatronics. Orange has selected SolidWorks to
implement innovative designs faster. EGS India is proud to serve Orange
to develop innovative designs, bringing New Ideas to Marketplace faster.
